DEMONSTRATIONS, ACTIVITIES, AND MORE

11-4PM

  • Fishing Pole Giveaway: Bring your young anglers to Coulee Region Trout Unlimited’s table to pick up a free fishing pole, and stick around to tie some flies and learn the basics. Then, explore the nextdoor Chaseburg Nature Trail and practice your cast in Coon Creek.
  • Flood Preparedness Kit Giveaway: Pack your own flood preparedness kit, with support from the Vernon County Public Health Department and other local businesses. Fostering community resilience to flooding is central to the mission of our Watershed Council and the Vernon County Public Health Department, whether that is through promoting land use practices that reduce flooding in the first place, or by connecting residents with the resources they need to safely recover when floods happen. That’s why we’re collaborating to distribute 150 flood preparedness kits, which will include well water test kits, information on local emergency contacts and shelter areas, emergency food and water, and cleanup supplies, all donated by local businesses.
  • Celebrate a conservation icon: Meet author and historian Curt Meine, who will be joining us to share his edited collection of writings by Driftless Area soil conservationist Paul Johnson, We Can Do Better: Collected Writings on Land, Conservation, and Public Policy. Learn more about Paul’s legacy from our guests with the Johnson Center for Land and Public Policy.
  • Stream Table: Get your hands wet with Fishers and Farmers mini watershed model, and learn some hydrology basics while playing in the sand.
  • Rainwater Infiltration Demonstration: Place your bets on the healthiest soil samples as they compete to infiltrate the most water, and see the difference soil structure makes when it comes to improving flood resilience.
  • Groundwater model: Take a peek below the surface, and see how water moves underground in the Driftless Area’s unique Karst geology, thanks to the Crawford County Stewardship Project.
  • Weaving with Beaver: Channel your inner ecosystem engineer with woodworker Lauren Newby. She’ll bring the willow, you build the dam. Meanwhile, browse beaver co-existence and management resources from our partner organizations.
  • Take home gardening: Stretch your green thumb, and start some seeds for a Confluence souvenir.
  • Watershed craft corner: Adopt a pet rock, build a birdfeeder, and explore conservation-themed coloring books.
